Water consumption and potential for savings

A true but little-known fact is that the amount of drinkable water available globally is constantly shrinking. This is a real problem with an increasingly negative impact on the environment and also on your pocket. And yet in Germany, for example, every person uses, on average, 127 liters of water per day.¹ What can we do about this? It’s important to increase people’s awareness of their water use and encourage them to actively save water.

Weltweit wird das Trinkwasser im knapper und teurer. Auch in Deutschland ist der Pro-Kopf-Verbrauch sehr hoch. Für einen weltweit nachhaltigen Wasserverbrauch muss der Umgang mit (Trink-)Wasser deutlich sorgsamer werden. Das Ziel ist es uns zu sensibilisieren und den eigenen Verbrauch zu hinterfragen.

Wasser zu sparen ist gar nicht so schwer. Ein bewussterer Umgang, wie etwa das Abschalten der Waschbeckenarmatur beim Zähneputzen, kann schon einiges bewirken. Generell gilt, dass Wasser abgeschaltet werden sollte, wenn es nicht unmittelbar gebraucht wird. Beim tatsächlichen Gebrauch helfen wassersparende Armaturen.

Wasser sparen kann jede einzelne Person. Zwar können Individuen wenig bis gar keinen Einfluss auf den Wasserverbrauch etwa bei der Produktion von Gütern nehmen. Dennoch kann durch den bewussteren Umgang mit Wasser auch von Einzelpersonen viel erreicht werden. Das Bewusstsein hierfür sollte optimalerweise schon im Kindesalter geschaffen werden.

In allen Bereichen des Alltags lässt sich Wasser sparen. Im Haushalt sind hier besonders Bad und Küche im Fokus. Aber auch durch bewussteres Konsumverhalten kann Wasser gespart werden, indem etwa auf den Wasserverbrauch zur Produktion von bestimmten Gütern geachtet wird.

Wasser sparen kann man im Grunde jederzeit im Alltag. Aber auch zu anderen Zeiten, wie beispielsweise im Urlaub. So können Handtücher in Hotels mehrfach verwendet werden, um täglich hunderte Liter Wasser zu sparen, da weniger gewaschen werden muss. Auch die Auswahl nachhaltiger Unterkünfte und das Vermeiden von wasserarmen Regionen als Urlaubsziel können einen Unterschied machen.

Auch wenn häufig ein anderer Eindruck entsteht, ist Energie ein knappes Gut. Darüber hinaus schädigen viele Formen der Energiegewinnung die Umwelt. Aus diesen Gründen sollte immer sparsam mit Energie umgegangen werden.

Energie sparen kann man am einfachsten, indem man unnötigen Energieverbrauch im Alltag reduziert. In der Regel geht dies ohne große Umstände. Beispielsweise sollten Licht und Elektrogeräte, die gerade nicht in Benutzung sind, komplett ausgeschaltet werden. Haben die Artikel nur einen Standby-Modus, empfehlen sich Steckerleisten mit Schalter. Beim Heizen sollte die Temperatur nicht zu hoch eingestellt und nicht unnötig lange geheizt werden.

Jede Person kann im Alltag Energie sparen. Auch hier ist ein verantwortungsvoller Umgang mit den Ressourcen, für den schon früh ein Bewusstsein geschaffen wird, eine Menge wert.

Im Bad lässt sich beispielsweise durch das Verwenden von geeigneten Armaturen Energie sparen. Akkubetriebene Geräte, wie zum Beispiel Rasierapparat oder Föhn, sollten außerdem nur so lange wie nötig geladen werden und nicht dauerhaft in der Steckdose eingesteckt bleiben.

Eigentlich kann man fast immer Energie sparen. Neben dem Alltag lohnt es sich im Urlaub zum Beispiel, auf die Nutzung von Heizung bzw. Klimaanlage und Licht zu achten. Häufig sind diese vorab eingeschaltet, auch wenn die Nutzung gerade nicht notwendig ist.
